While using the self-checkout, a staff member, Noah, sat directly in front of us and stopped what he was doing to watch us the entire time we were scanning our items. At that moment, we were the only customers in the area. He did not greet us or acknowledge us in any way, but he interacted normally with other customers who arrived afterward. His behavior made us feel singled out and highly uncomfortable. Once my boyfriend finished scanning, Noah returned to his previous tasks, even though several customers were still using the self-checkout. This contrast in behavior raised concerns that we were being treated differently based on race. The conduct felt unprofessional and discriminatory. Every customer deserves to shop without feeling observed, singled out, or treated differently. Situations like this can make shopping feel unwelcoming and reflect poorly on the store. I hope Safeway addresses this issue through staff training or reviewing customer service practices to ensure that all customers are treated fairly and respectfully. I’ve also noticed several reviews from other customers mentioning feeling unwelcome at this location, which suggests that this may be a broader issue affecting the shopping experience.
