I’ve been watching this place forever on social media thanks to my usual reliable influencers, and finally made it over to Ban Ban Burger off Sawtelle in West LA. First off, it’s not your typical smash burger joint. This place mixes Thai flavors with classic smash patties, and that twist is exactly what makes it stand out.
Parking is street only, and like most West LA spots, it can be a little tricky, but we found a spot without too much circling. The space itself is casual, kind of fun, with both indoor and outdoor seating and a laid-back vibe that fits the food perfectly.
The menu is small but anything but boring. You’ve got Thai-inspired smash burgers like the Grapow Smash (spicy and flavorful with basil chili and runny egg), the Wagyu Laab Smash, a couple of sando choices like the Panang chicken, and some creative sides and shakes.
We tried a couple of different burgers and the chicken sando. The flavors are bold, this isn’t your straight-American burger. Think Thai seasonings, fragrant pickles, unique sauces, and a little heat that hits without being overwhelming. Even people online are calling it one of the better Thai-twist smash burgers in town. Portion-wise it’s about what you expect for a smash burger, not huge, but enough if you’re hungry without going overboard. The chicken sandwich is juicy and tasty, loaded with good toppings, and the Pandan or Thai tea shakes are a nice bonus that feel like part of the experience rather than an afterthought. Service was quick and friendly, and everything came out fresh. Price is reasonable for what you get. These burgers typically run around $9 to the teens, with specialty sammies up closer but still fair for LA. Overall, Ban Ban Burger is one of those places that delivers something different while still hitting the juicy smash burger vibe. Flavor forward, worth the visit, and one I’d definitely go back to next time I’m in the area.
