Welcome to Bluestone Los Altos!
We're heading to the Bay Area with our first sit down cafe in the San Francisco region. Housed in what used to be the Los Altos train station, this new café brings locals a brunch and lunch destination inspired by the beautiful Australian coast.
The Design
The café was uniquely designed to blend signature Melbourne & Sydney coastal café aesthetics, with the historical features of the building. The space, now a heritage-listed Los Altos landmark features a grand entrance that opens up into an open-plan café, with segmented seating areas creating a large, spacious feel. Australian beach prints adorn the walls, and bright furnishings paired with an abundance of natural light bring a coastal feel to the cafe.
Menu
The café menu includes Bluestone Lane favorites, such as Avocado Smash and the Good Grains Granola, complimented by Californian café staples, such as the Breakfast Burrito, as well as a range of progressive, seasonal dishes inspired by culinary themes found in Australia.

This place is very popular so either go earlier in the morning or get a reservation if you can.
The host was nice and allowed us to sit at a reserved table since they were not coming for another hour.
The food was very good and came out fast. Their potato wedges are very crisp and the sweet and sour sauce is tasty and goes well with them. Ricotta pancakes and the soft chili scramble hit the spot for my wife and daughter.
Nice bright decor and the service was very attentive when we were here.

3.5, rounding up to 4 because the American rating system is [redacted] up. And at least these folks have (thankfully) resisted the obnoxious Bay Area surcharge BS'ery.
Overall, this place is... fine. The service is friendly and helpful, and everything else: fine.
- Parking? The lot right in front is cramped, but the lot across is... fine.
- Seating? Not great, but not especially uncomfortable. Also fine.
- Food? Serviceable. Filling, tasty-enough, uninspiring, also... fine.
More specifics on the food:
- Potato wedges: Kinda bland and really needed a touch of seasoning beyond the included ketchup. Some are crisp, some aren't. Sorta disappointing for a $3 upsell.
- Fresh squeezed juices: Dunno, they were out of all of them today.
- Kouign-amann: Small'ish. Unremarkable.
- Burrata & prosciutto sandwich: Kinda odd, frankly, but ultimately (you guessed it), fine. The prosciutto was rolled or bunched up into sorta a cylinder on each sandwich half, so bites were either all-prosciutto or none. The bread was barely toasted, so rather soggy. Jam & greens were a nice touch, though, and the overall portion-size was generous.
My earlier visit was some time ago, so I don't remember exactly what I ordered, but I recall it being mid, er, fine then as well.
So who is this place even for?
- Folks who crave some lovely outdoor seating
- Aussies nostalgic for what I guess are some Aussie classic foods and drinks?
- And, speaking personally, those of us who gotta burn through monthly Resy credits and have few other nearby restaurants to choose from.
I wish I had more actionable advice for this restaurant other than "please strive to up your food game", I really do, but I just had to be honest here.

Love the coffee, brunch item, and vibe here. I personally appreciate so many savory options for brunch. Food is always good and comes out promptly once you order. Service can be slow because they’re always busy, so ordering via QR code can help speed things up. I also like that everything has a calorie count so you can stay on track for health goals while enjoying yummy food.

We used to visit frequently, but in our experience, the food quality seemed to decline over time — on a couple of occasions, the bread didn’t seem very fresh to us — so we haven’t been back as much lately. I also noticed the rewards program was changed in a way that felt less worthwhile to me personally. The staff have always been friendly and the decor is lovely. Hopefully these are things the owners are able to look into.
