Most people look at a bee and their "fear-narrowed animal brain" just sees a threat to be smashed or retreated from. They don't see the worker. They don't see the creature that literally holds the ecosystem together. We keep them in boxes, we steal their labor, and we don't pay them a dime. The least we can do—the bare minimum for a species that sustains our planet—is not treat their life’s work like literal trash.
I was at Panera today, practicing a little "Bee Hive Hospitality." I had a honey bear that was "empty" by corporate standards but had about 2 oz of liquid gold left at the bottom. I was mid-conversation with a chill employee (the "Jennifer Aniston" of the shift), explaining that I was going to use the hot water tap right there to shake it up and utilize every last drop. Total efficiency. Respect for the work.
Enter: Eddie Haskell’s Nephew.
This manager—complete with a clip-on bow tie and more "flair" than a TGI Fridays in the 90s—swoops in. Before I can even grab the hot water, he carelessly grabs the bear and tosses it straight into the bin without a second thought. He didn't even look at it. He didn't squeeze it. He just saw "trash" where there was actual value.
I looked him dead in the eye and said, "You're doing a fantastic job. Thank you."
I leaned in. I gave him the most obvious, nodding, sarcastic "participation trophy" tonality you can imagine. I was practically handing him an invisible Oscar for "Best Performance in Resource Destruction."
He didn't even register it. He just beamed this high-pitched, socially hollow "Thank you very much!" back at me, genuinely thinking he’d just schooled his employee on "cleanliness." He took my sarcasm as a trophy for his mantle. The girl just looked at me like, "Yeah, I don't know how he got this job either."
Here is the part that everyone needs to understand about this "broken system": When corporate drones like this throw away resources because they are too ignorant to see the value, guess who pays for it? You do. At the end of the day, when the "waste" numbers go up, they start charging the consumer $0.25 for a honey packet or $1.00 for four sauces. They blame "inflation" or "wasteful customers," but the reality is it's the ignorance of the people they put in charge. It’s not even arrogance—it’s pure, filtered ignorance. I don’t just squawk about these systems; I audit them. And today, the audit shows that your "efficiency" is actually just a tax on the rest of us.
Next time you see a bee, remember they’re the ones doing the real work—unlike the guys in the bow ties.
