I have to admit - I was expecting a much more elevated experience at this restaurant. Been to other around the country and have experience much better service and food to be honest. From the get-go, the valet station telling me I pulled into the wrong area - which is not properly signed or designated was not a good start. Upon entering, the hostess asked us to wait to the side which is understandable, but a few minutes later we were told we are not allowed to stand their and need to move into a busy hallway and figure out where to "stand". Again, not a very great experience and the approach of the customer service at the "front of house" needs attention. Once seated, our waiter was decent, but the worst I have ever had at Mastros. Did not really recommend anything or go over any special menu items or select meats like they usually do. Last but not least, the food was okay, but we have had much batter at other locations. Steak was cooked perfectly, but there was literally no lobster in the mashed potatoes, scallops where undercooked, and the chocolate layer cake at the end wasn't too good either. For the price and occasion, we should have had a much better experience overall.

Mastro’s is a unique anomaly amongst restaurants where the service style is based around having a young/sexy staff, and impressive ambience, but not fine dining. It’s a pay to play environment driven by volume. This particular location appears to be at the end of its life span. The seats are worn/dirty and the staff isn’t very attentive. Run your finger underneath your chair and it will come out with dirt/grease on it 🧐 I follow the Mastro’s Instagram. There are blaring service errors on the social media page that I also witnessed in person: elbows in face, team service not in unison, improper wine service etc. I saw numerous bus boys try crumb a table by sweeping it off the side 😳 they would get laughed out of the restaurant at places with a fine dining focus. Prepare to be impressed with dry ice, but you’ll notice service issues if you are familiar with traditional fine dining. Not an issue for younger guests, but it alienates baby boomers and executives who expect a fine dining experience at this price point. The wine program has great bottles but they don’t have crystal glasses if you order something nice. Nothing like spending $500 on a bottle to see a manager rip off the foil, dump the sediment in your decanter and then serve you in a $5 wine glass. I have a feeling wine sales are very low here based on the lack of crystal glasses and awkward service. Wine dinners would be a great opportunity to bring guests in and increase sales, but they’re not likely to happen based on what I witnessed. Another thing I want to point out is that gratuity is added on parties over 8, but you might not be able to get a refill on your cocktail. Mastro’s isn’t supposed to add gratuity, but they do it at this location. I feel like service would be more attentive if there wasn’t gratuity added. If you see your server early on, but your drinks sit empty for the rest of the meal ask for the gratuity to be removed. There is nothing printed on the menu that implies gratuity on parties of 8 or more.

Mastro's Steakhouse in Costa Mesa is a go-to for client celebrations and closing dinners. The prime steaks are exceptional, the wine program is deep, and the live music adds a level of energy you don't find at most steakhouses. Positioned right next to South Coast Plaza, it's perfectly situated for OC's most discerning clientele. When I'm working with buyers in the Costa Mesa and Newport area who want to treat themselves to a memorable night out, Mastro's is always the first call.

We’ve always enjoyed coming to Mastro’s Steakhouse, which is why this experience was so disappointing. My husband, kids, and I went to celebrate our anniversary—this has been one of our go-to restaurants for special occasions. My boys are well-behaved, and we always make sure they are respectful in nicer settings. They were using their iPads at a low volume, nothing out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, the manager approached our table and addressed the situation in a very rude and condescending way, saying the iPads were too loud. It wasn’t so much what was said, but how it was said. The interaction made us feel uncomfortable and honestly unwelcome, especially on a night that was meant to be special for our family. We completely understand maintaining a certain atmosphere, but there’s a respectful way to communicate that to guests—especially regulars. This experience didn’t reflect the level of service we’ve come to expect here. We’ve always loved this place, so I hope this was just a one-off situation—but it definitely put a damper on our anniversary dinner.

I recently had dinner at Mastro’s Steakhouse in Costa Mesa with my family. Overall, the food was excellent—everything was well-prepared and met the high expectations we had for this restaurant. Our server was friendly and attentive at the beginning, which made for a great first impression. However, later during the evening, I noticed her speaking with another server about us. I may be mistaken, but it felt uncomfortable and took away from the overall experience. I believe that maintaining professionalism and making guests feel comfortable throughout the entire dining experience is very important, especially at a restaurant of this caliber. That said, the quality of the food was outstanding, and I would still consider coming back. I just hope for a more consistently professional service experience next time
