This store moved its handicap parking to the left side of the building, but they make sure the left entrance doesn't work 90% of the time so the severely disabled are forced to move twice as much as necessary. More hatred toward the handicapped and violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Employees are very rude. I have no idea why the store's response below doesn't realize I was commenting about its Carpinteria store, not its store in Clearlake. Out to lunch?

I am a regular customer at the Albertsons located at 1018 Casitas Pass Rd in Carpinteria, as it’s one of the few convenient grocery options in the area without needing to drive to Montecito or farther. While I appreciate having a local store, I feel compelled to share ongoing concerns about the customer service experience, particularly at the front end. Several staff members consistently deliver service that falls well short of basic professional standards. For example, Rosie frequently comes across as abrupt, unfriendly, and unwelcoming—rarely smiling and often responding in a curt or aggressive manner. This sets a negative tone right from the entrance or checkout. Emma, who also works the front end, is another significant issue. She is very rude, disengaged, and often talks down to my wife and me. She frequently insinuates that customers are stealing bags—even when they are honest, paying customers like ourselves. Her tone is consistently beyond rude, and she is a major reason I dread stepping foot inside this store. At the self-checkout area, another associate (Guy, who often has a Band-Aid on his cheek) frequently appears disengaged or distracted. When customers need assistance—such as for bags—he often provides no response, leaving shoppers to help themselves. Yet when a customer does take a 10-cent bag independently, he questions it in a way that implies suspicion of theft. As someone who always pays for bags and has never taken one without paying, I find these repeated accusations frustrating and insulting. As for Val, keep smiling and doing your thing, at least you make the time and effort to talk to my wife and I. You are always welcoming and try and bring a positive attitude to work. Much respect. This pattern of distrust extends beyond these individuals: I’ve been stopped or chased down multiple times to verify my receipt, despite being a paying, honest customer. These experiences create an atmosphere of suspicion rather than appreciation for loyal shoppers. Overall, the front-end operations at this location feel poorly managed and contribute to one of the most consistently negative grocery shopping experiences in Santa Barbara County. For visitors passing through on weekends, I would recommend avoiding this store. For locals who have no other nearby choice, the service issues make routine shopping stressful rather than convenient. I urge the management to prioritize customer satisfaction by reinforcing basic customer service principles—such as friendliness, attentiveness, and assuming good faith from patrons—especially in self-checkout. Training or reevaluation of certain staff members could make a significant difference. I truly hope these concerns are taken seriously and addressed, as I would prefer to continue shopping locally without these ongoing frustrations. Thank you for your attention.

Another disappointing experience at a local grocery store. While using self-checkout, the attendant aggressively told me I couldn’t take a hand basket outside. I find that policy annoying but was willing to work around it; my plan was to transfer my items to a full-size cart to carry them to my van. I didn’t need bags or the basket, just a way to get groceries to the parking lot. Instead of a calm explanation, the attendant raised her voice again, then spoke to me in a hostile, dismissive tone after I explained what I was doing. To make matters worse, there were no carts available inside, so I had to walk partway to the parking lot before finding one. Policies aside, the issue here was how I was treated. If your goal is to make customers feel unwelcome or talked down to, this was a success. If you don’t trust customers to return baskets, reconsider offering them or at least train staff to handle the situation professionally.
