I had a frustrating experience at this Safeway location today. I attempted to pay with Apple Pay at multiple self-checkout machines, and none of them worked. I understand that technical issues happen, but what made the situation disappointing was the lack of help and communication from staff.
When I asked for assistance, I was given no clear explanation of what the issue was or what I should do next. I then waited in line for a cashier, but Apple Pay did not work there either. When the cashier asked another employee (Kim) for help, she was dismissive and did not offer any useful guidance. When I asked what I should do, I was essentially told “I don’t know” in an unhelpful tone.
As someone who works in customer service, I know things can go wrong—but basic communication and empathy go a long way. A simple explanation or suggestion would have made a big difference. Instead, I ended up leaving without purchasing anything after wasting time in line.
At the end, I expressed that the situation was disappointing, and Kim responded with a laugh along with a quick apology, which felt unprofessional.
I ended up leaving without purchasing anything after waiting in line. I hope management can improve both communication and customer service in situations like this.

Worst customer service ever. No checkers open. I ask a rep why there are no aisles open. He tells me I can use the self chekout. I have beer I say. He says that I can get the beer using self checkout. That was a lie. He expects me to check out all my other items in the self checkout, then I have to wait in another line where he is standing forcing people to self checkout, then wait in another line. Great job at taking customer service to new low.
EDIT FROM BS REPLY - If you had workers serving customers, I would still be a Safeway shopper. Instead smug jerks make me self checkout my items and expect me to wait in another line to buy beer - he was a jerk and your corporation is so greedy you don't hire workers who give a crap. Nob Hill and Grocery Outlet staff are delightful.

I usually shop at Safeway, but the Campbell location consistently provides the best customer service I’ve experienced.
I stopped by the bakery today to pick up some French bread for my mom (she’s a huge fan of their bread!), and I had the best experience with Sierra behind the counter. Usually, when I ask for bread to be sliced at other stores, it feels like a hassle for the staff, but she was incredibly kind and professional.
Even though the slicing machine was actually broken, Sierra didn't let that stop her—she took the extra time to hand-slice the loaf for me anyway! It’s rare to see that kind of 'above and beyond' effort these days.
Huge thanks to Sierra for making my day and making sure my mom got her favorite bread exactly how she likes it. This store is lucky to have her!
