Yesterday we had lunch there, and honestly, I’m very disappointed.
The DAILY CATCH and the steak were good. The truffle fries were good too, but for my taste they had too much overall seasoning, and after a while the salt and flavours became overwhelming, so we couldn’t finish the portion.
I also have to mention the desserts. They are extremely small for the price, so keep that in mind before ordering a $15 dessert because it’s basically two bites. We tried all of them, and unfortunately most of them were quite flavourless.
FOREST ECHOES felt like a good idea for a vegan dessert, but honestly, even as someone who loves vegan desserts, I found it inedible. The chestnut sponge cake was too chewy, and together with the vanilla crémeux it created a strange gooey texture. The espresso sorbet that was on top contained frozen water crystals that gave it a icy crunchy texture in your mouth. It tasted cheap.
This was especially disappointing from a restaurant included in the MICHELIN Guide Recommended selection. I used to really enjoy coming here a few years ago when they had just been added to the guide. Back then the food was excellent, and their lemon tart was honestly one of the best desserts I had in Vancouver. Unfortunately, not anymore. Something clearly changed in the kitchen, and not for the better.
The service also left a bad impression. After we finished eating, the server brought us the bill without asking if we were ready for it and silently placed it on the table. A moment later she refilled our water bottle and loudly dropped it right in front of me. I checked the time and we had only been there for about an hour and a half. I understand that restaurants may have time limits for tables, but the way this was handled felt rude and unnecessary, especially since there were still many empty tables around us.
About ten minutes later, the server came back holding the card machine, even though we hadn’t asked to pay yet, and just stood there silently waiting for a few minutes. At that point we felt pushed to leave, and there was no desire to stay any longer.
If you’re deciding between this restaurant and other places for dinner, I would honestly recommend going somewhere else. The food is no longer anything special, the service felt passive aggressive, and the desserts absolutely do not justify the price. It’s sad to say because this used to be one of my favourite places at UBC a few years ago.
