I brought my family for a meal yesterday on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
We are woodland cree and dene people, my grandmother was in residential school and my father was in day school. This is an extremely heavy day for our family as well as every other Indigenous family.
Our server laughed about how she didn’t know what the “holiday” was for as well as complaining about how “busy” the establishment was as a result of the walk downtown.
This was extremely offensive and caused distress to myself, my mother and my nephews. After raising concerns and explaining that I do not want her serving us, she became very irritable and defensive.
Going as far to tell me she “knows” what the date was and that her children wore orange shirts. This date represents so much more than an orange shirt and our family carries that grief. We only wanted to enjoy a meal together.
After speaking with a supervisor, the server became extremely loud and played the victim, yelling in the kitchen about how it wasn’t her fault and how her “attitude” wasn’t ignorance. That this is “dumb” and asking to go home. So loud, that I could hear her clearly from the front door where I was speaking to the manager.
As Indigenous peoples, we do not feel safe returning and have major concerns regarding the ethical and moral capacities of this establishment.
I had a mixed experience at Montana’s BBQ. The food was decent overall and the atmosphere was good, but the service was only okay and could have been more attentive. The biggest disappointment was ordering the all-you-can-eat ribs and finding out they had run out of ribs. That’s a pretty frustrating situation when the main reason for choosing the promotion is unlimited ribs. I understand that restaurants can run out of certain items during busy periods, but for an all-you-can-eat rib promotion, I’d expect them to be better prepared or at least communicate the situation before taking the order. The staff were polite, but the overall experience felt average. I’d probably give it another try, but I’d hope the availability and service are better next time.
I am posting this disturbing experience that happened to my bestfriend today, it is extremely sad that hate still lives on this strong and especially in The hospitality industry where people are supposed to feel safe and welcomed. DO BETTER. Shame on this employee!!!!!
“Took my family to Montanas (Fort McMurray) today and am blown away by the lack of compassion or understanding.
Having the server tell the table next to my family that she doesn’t know what this “holiday” is for, doesn’t know why there’s so many people downtown and doesn’t know what’s going on made our heart ache.
As if what we carry is burdensome because they were busy, not because of the burden itself we hold.
To go into the back, get defensive when we spoke up and let her as well as management know that was an incredibly thoughtless and offensive thing to do was outrageous. To be yelling in the kitchen about how she did nothing wrong and this is “stupid” is insane.
As the granddaughter of a residential school survivor, the daughter of a day school survivor my heart aches knowing this day to honour our families affected has become about educating non-indigenous about our trauma.
I spoke up since we had our boys with us, and we teach them to speak up, to know our history and to be proud of our culture. Our boys know to speak against any narrative that degrades, or downplays what we experienced and what is happening to this day.
Heavy heart with the outcome, and big prayers for any relations trying to live their life carrying what we ALL carry.“

We had such an amazing experience at Montana’s in Fort McMurray! A huge shoutout to Falynn, who was absolutely outstanding. Her service was exceptional, but what really made our visit special was her incredible personality. She was so friendly, welcoming, attentive, and genuinely enjoyable to have as our server. You can tell she truly loves what she does, and that makes such a difference!
The food was absolutely amazing as well—everything was delicious and came out perfectly. It was one of those meals where the great food and fantastic service made the whole experience memorable.
Falynn is a true asset to Montana’s! She deserves recognition for the wonderful experience she gives her customers. We will definitely be back! ❤️

What an amazing experience at Montana’s BBQ & Bar! The food was great, but the absolute highlight was the exceptional service from our wonderful server, Kijiana!
She was incredibly friendly, attentive, and genuinely made our whole experience that much better. It’s not often you get service that stands out enough to make you want to write a review, but Kijiana absolutely deserves the recognition!
Hands down one of the best servers we’ve ever had. We’ll definitely be back and can’t wait to see you again, Kijiana! Thank you for taking such great care of us! 🙌🔥
