Very disappointing experience at Nesters Market Gateway. My interaction with a staff member named Joleen was extremely unpleasant idk why she was rude and made me feel very uncomfortable with the way she spoke to me. The tone and attitude came across as discriminatory and unwelcoming, which is completely unacceptable and not okay. The store has also gotten worse over time and clearly needs better management. On top of that, a lot of the produce on display looked old and borderline rotten, which was really concerning. Overall, not a place I’d recommend.

Recently, I’ve noticed several changes at this establishment, some positive, such as a cleaner, tidier environment, but unfortunately, there have also been some disheartening shifts. One of the more troubling aspects is the way new? management communicates with employees. It often seems as though they are spoken to as though they lack basic understanding, which is both dismissive and condescending. On multiple occasions, I’ve overheard a staff member with pink hair speaking to her colleagues in a tone that can only be described as rude and disrespectful. Additionally, the store appears to have become significantly less accommodating to those with disabilities. I witnessed an incident where an individual, who clearly had difficulty walking, was ignored for an extended period and eventually, she was reluctantly acknowledged to be told they need to line up to get their recyclables counted. Which would make more sense if the distance from the bottle counter and the service desk was far, but making someone walk a few steps (when they clearly have trouble walking) just to be acknowledged is awful. To witness someone, already facing physical challenges, being treated in such a dehumanizing manner was deeply disheartening. It seems that empathy and a genuine effort to meet people halfway are being sacrificed in favor of "structure." Its clear that they have room for improvement. I truly hope they recognize the importance of making these necessary changes.

I am writing to formally raise a concern regarding an experience at Nesters Gateway involving an employee named Joleen that left me feeling racially judged and deeply disrespected. As a brown person who was born and raised in Canada, I felt singled out through her tone, facial expressions, and overall demeanour, which came across as judgmental and discriminatory rather than professional or welcoming. Her voice became raised and aggressive, as though I was forcing her to do her job, which was both intimidating and inappropriate. While scanning my items, she handled them roughly and threw them aside, which felt disrespectful and hostile. I was addressed abruptly, without basic courtesy, and made to feel uncomfortable as though assumptions were being made about me based on my appearance. This went beyond poor customer service and crossed into behaviour that felt biased and demeaning. This experience caused genuine distress and has affected my trust in her ability to treat people with fairness and respect. I believe this matter should be reviewed by HR, and that appropriate action, including corrective training or removal from this location, be taken to ensure such behavior is not tolerated within your company. I would not want anyone else to go through the same hurtful experience in the future.
