  Partner and I decided to try the market for a quick snack at around 2pm, we chose a couple of sushi rolls and chinese food. Honestly, it was the biggest let down. Chinese food was crusty and obviously old for the day. Now, the biggest issue - the avocado roll. Upon eating the last 2 pieces, my chopstick slipped on the piece and it completely disassembled, THANKFULLY. The longest curled up black hair was intwined in between the avocado. I immediately took the roll to the sushi counter and showed their staff. I seriously hope whomever took the roll and told me they would tell management, did. I will never eat from the market again. Worst hair/food experience of my life. I am glad the roll fell apart or else that hair would have been in my mouth.

  On Friday, 6 March, we came in for lunch at the Urban Fare café. The staff member assisting us at the counter was friendly and mentioned she was new. When our meals were brought to the table, she immediately apologised and said that “things are so bad in the kitchen.” Unfortunately, the food reflected that. The toasted cheese consisted of crust, with the other slice burnt. The accompanying sauce had splattered across the bowl and the dish appeared extremely poorly assembled and unhygienic, as though it had been hastily scraped together. As I am currently pregnant, I have to be particularly cautious about food safety. I explained this to the server and said I could not eat the meal in the condition it was served. She apologised again and appeared equally uncomfortable bringing the food out. The diners seated next to us were also dissatisfied with their meals and requested a refund as well. The refund process itself was not straightforward, and the amount returned was short. I would strongly encourage management to review the kitchen procedures from that day, including any available kitchen footage, as the standard of food preparation and presentation suggested that something had clearly gone wrong operationally. I have never seen a simple meal prepared so poorly and unhygienically.

  The store itself is clean and well maintained, and the Kelowna manager, Jeremy, is consistently great to deal with. The deli and stocking staff could benefit from a refresher on manners and proactive, face-to-face customer service. During my last visit, the deli was out of tuna salad. I asked the employee doing food prep, who didn’t know and kindly went to check with someone in the back. I was then told, rather dismissively, that the prep cook wasn’t in “that’s the problem” and “who knows when it will be back in stock.” While I understand staffing challenges, it’s surprising that no one on shift with food handling certification could prepare a basic item using the store’s standard recipe. The lack of initiative and solution-focused service was disappointing. Because of this and many other experiences over the past 3 years, I’ll finally be shopping elsewhere despite the inconvenience. My highest hope is the store addresses this, as the potential for better service is clearly there.
