Had a craving for a Black Forest cake. Knowing Save On and Safeway make their own cakes and they're normally pretty good I decided to pick one up from Save On on North Road Burnaby. I bought this Black Forest cake on Jan. 28, 2026. The picture might not show clearly the very, very thin layer of jam used in the cake but trust me it's there because I'm not into very sweet things so if I'm writing a complaint then it's a problem! I don't think this cake from Save On is even worth being called a Black Forest cake. Its just a chocolate flavoured sponge cake with cream and a bit of jam. Normal Black Forest cakes have a nice amount of jam in the filling but this cake was overly thin. It's like a teaspoon to cover one layer! (I won't even mention there wasn't even a hint of liquor in this Black Forest cake, which real ones have. Oops now I mentioned it!) I suggest check out the HALF sized cakes first , which they sometimes sell. It will show what it really looks like inside. I saw one there that day and that should've warned me. That 1/2 round Black Forest cake showed a very thin layer of jam too, which made it look cheap so I decided to choose this other full rectangle Black Forest cake hoping it'd be better. I was wrong. On top of that the person working at the bakery that ignored us until I asked for help. She was rude asking us to hurry up as I was just asking her when that cake was made. She said she had many things to do. As a customer that's not my problem, as you're hired to work there, and part of her job is customer service. If not , then management should put a proper seller there. She didn't even apologized for her rudeness. Just huffed and puffed under her breath and "asked" if I still wanted the cake. In case you're wondering , I didn't write this review to strike back. That would not be objective and fair. My aim is to be sure the reader here is aware of where they should get their cake. If you're paying a fair amount of $ for it, I don't want you to waste your money and be disappointed. Also hoping that management can read this and properly train their staff. PICTURE 1: You can't even see the jam. PICTURE 2: The cake is seen in comparison to the extremely thin layer of the jam filling.

A couple of days ago I went into this store. I wanted to make a few small essential purchases in the bakery section. And suddenly, right inside the store, something ran across the floor — either a rat or a mouse, but of a rather large size. At that moment, a store employee was walking toward me. I greeted her and politely asked whether they were aware that there were rodents in their store. She answered yes. I then asked how they were addressing this issue. She referred me to the manager — he had noticed our conversation and the employee pointing to him, so he approached me immediately and asked how he could help. I told him that I had just seen a mouse in their store. He reacted with irony and laughed: “Where? Where?” — and began looking around with the same ironic attitude. I replied that I was not joking and that I had wanted to buy baked goods there, but now I was afraid to. When I asked how they were dealing with this problem, he answered: “Yes, we know there are rodents. We fight them from time to time using different methods, but they do appear periodically.” The conversation led nowhere — I did not receive any concrete answer. And the manager’s initial ironic reaction completely took away any desire to ever visit this store again.

I had a wonderful experience at Save-On-Foods thanks to Mahshid. Last night, she thoughtfully put together a beautiful bouquet for me, and it truly made my day. Her kindness, creativity, and attention to detail really stood out. It’s clear that she cares about her work and her customers. Thank you, Mahshid, for going above and beyond — I really appreciate it!

My husband and I visited for the first time to try out the happy hour deals at the deli counter. We had some questions that the friendly deli worker was unsure about so he called his supervisor. Ashton came by and personally explained which appies were included in the deal and optimal cooking instructions. Much to our surprise, he even took the time to package our meats in individual bags and was pleasant and conversational the whole time. We’ll definitely come by again!
