Professionalism and Pricing Integrity Issues at Safeway Starbucks I am deeply disappointed by the lack of pricing consistency and professional standards at this Safeway Starbucks. My experience involved two separate visits in one day during a "Wednesday Warm-Up" promotion. First Visit: I was charged an inconsistent fee for heavy cream. When I questioned this based on the previous week's promo price that I paid, the situation escalated. Instead of a professional explanation, the barista began talking over me, forcing me to raise my voice to be heard – I made a HUGE YELLING SCENE! She insisted: “We have always charged for heavy cream for a drink that normally comes with 2% or whole milk. I’ll waive it this time, but next time I will charge you for it!” As she walked away, dismissively stating she "wasn't going to argue over 80 cents," I noted it wasn’t her money to lose. She replied, "It’s not my money—it’s Safeway's money." She called a manager, the manager on duty echoed this by saying – “maybe it was something we should be charging for and have not, but it will be waived "this time," implying I was asking for an unearned favor rather than what I paid last week. Second Visit: Two hours later, after finding my receipt from the previous week as proof of the correct promo price, I returned to address the disrespect I had experienced. I needed help viewing the digital receipt correctly on my device, so I went to customer service, who reached out to other employees near the self-checkout lanes for assistance. One of the cashiers looked at me and told other employees - "Yeah, that's the lady from this morning," making it clear that I had been the subject of staff conversation – or that I was the troublemaker from this morning. Rather than addressing the barista's earlier hostility, the manager praised the barista for walking away from the conflict she had initiated. While the manager did eventually state, “I will research this to ensure there is consistent pricing in the future,” the damage was already done. As a former call center employee, the total lack of de-escalation training and empathy here is shocking. Ultimately, this wasn't about 80 cents, but about a complete breakdown in pricing integrity; when a store treats advertised promotions as arbitrary or at the barista's personal discretion, they trade customer trust for an '80-cent win' and create a hostile, unprofessional environment. This situation didn’t even have to go this far. Safeway has lost a customer for life.

Yo Safeway Boses, I’ve seen both employees and customers have to fight to get Mathew, at self checkout, to do his job. He’s always chatting with employees, on his phone, or disappearing . He def looks like he doesn’t want to be there, and when you ask him for help he acts like you’re an inconvenience. Mathew, you work at Safeway, get over yourself. You have one job and you can’t even do that right.

Racial profiled on a Sunday morning in a funky Safeway store on Campbell and Prince. There were 2 white men, a white lady and myself checking out. I put in my phone number which has all of my personal information attached, and proceeded to ring up my items. One item gave me an error so I scanned it again with no problems. Then the alert came on instructing the attendant to make sure both items were scanned, he cleared it. So when I was done and ready to check out the alert came on with the replay of me scanning my items. I thought it was for the water, which I had 2 of and I've experienced that before, and no problem. So the attendant cleared it. So I get ready to pay and I reach back and touch my back pocket (I don't carry a purse) to make sure I had my phone; cause I have a habit of laying it down while I'm shopping (my shopping list is on the Safeway app). Then I go for my wallet in my front pocket and the alert goes off with a replay of me touching my back pocket and getting my wallet. Now I'm upset. I asked the attendant why I was being profiled. He said it's AI and goes off like that. If that was the case, then why didn't the alert go off with the other customers? He said maybe they didn't reach for their back pocket. So I guess men don't carry their wallets in their back pocket anymore? That statement was total BS......those alarms went off three times. That was not a coincidence, it was purposeful and deliberate. This is not the first time I've experienced racism in Safeway, but it will be that last. I'm 67 years old and life is too short to be treated like a thief and less than a human being. If your intent was to run people of color away from your store, then you succeeded with me. You will never get another dime of my money.
