Recently, I had a distressing experience where I was wrongly accused of theft due to a simple self-checkout mishap. While the initial interaction with a manager named Mike was unprofessional, I am returning to give 5 stars because of how the store corrected the mistake. When I returned a week later, the acting manager, Autumn, provided a masterclass in customer service. She was unpretentious and gave a full, sincere explanation without being patronizing with a mere apology. She acknowledged that staff must remain professional and not jump to conclusions. She explained that the employee who wrongfully accused me of intentionally leaving the self check out register without paying, was put on suspension which made me feel like I wasn't being blamed for complaining. There's nothing like doing your daily shopping, being wrongfully accused of theft, and then being passively blamed for it by management. That would make it worse. But it unfortunately happens with unprofessional staff who don't belong in the customer service business. It was clear the store took ownership of the error, including taking disciplinary action regarding the staff involved. I realize people are not flawless and I would never want this employee to be fired or any of the sort. But I am glad that Autumn went over and above in her explanation informing me that there was disciplinary action taken so that it doesn't happen to another patron. Considering I have been shopping there 2 times a day for decades, had I been offered a voucher for my troubles I would have declined because of the overwhelming sincerity. It’s easy to feel singled out or judged in these environments, but Autumn made me feel like a valued part of the 'Safeway family' again. Most of the staff here are professional and friendly. If you ever have an issue, go to management—they are swift to offer a sincere apology rather than making you feel at fault for complaining. Highly recommend this location for their accountability, sincerity, and professionalism.
