The treatment of unhoused individuals at this location is deeply concerning and inconsistent with Panera’s founding ethos. Panera’s original “Pay-What-You-Can” cafés were created to support individuals experiencing food insecurity and to foster a culture of dignity and community care. Watching staff and contracted security question customers for receipts and monitor how long they have been seated — in a café designed for lingering, studying, and using Wi-Fi reflects a misunderstanding of both the brand’s history and basic human decency.
As a business owner who values ethical treatment of all people, I find this approach unacceptable. No individual should be regarded as “less than” simply because they lack resources. This conduct does not align with the standards upheld at other Panera locations, and I will be contacting their corporate office to address this discrepancy.
