  I recently dined at State & Main Kitchen + Bar in Red Deer, and unfortunately left very disappointed, mainly because of the service. The restaurant operates on a self-seating system, which is totally fine. However, it was quite busy, and after seating ourselves it took a long time before anyone acknowledged us. That can be understandable during peak hours, but the overall experience didn’t improve from there. When I ordered my steak, I asked for no potatoes and to substitute mushrooms instead. Our waitress quickly dismissed the request, saying she couldn’t guarantee it but would ask. I even showed her the menu where it clearly states you can add sautéed onions or mushrooms for an extra charge, and I explained I was more than willing to pay. She simply repeated that she couldn’t guarantee it and walked away. There was no effort to engage, clarify, or follow up - just dismissal. Throughout the evening, she seemed rushed and uninterested. Every time she came to the table, she would speak quickly and leave before we could ask anything further. When our food arrived, a second waitress delivered it. My mother and I realized we had forgotten to mention her shellfish allergy and wanted to confirm there was no shrimp or anything else added to the dish. In a very condescending tone, the waitress replied, “It’s tuna.” We were simply trying to ensure my mother wouldn’t have an allergic reaction - the response felt unnecessarily snarky and dismissive. At the end of the meal, when we were paying, my mother had some difficulty with the POS machine. The original waitress stood there without offering help and then walked away immediately once payment went through, quickly saying, “Have a good night, bye,” with no smile or courtesy. The food itself was suboptimal, which might have been forgivable if the service had been warm or attentive. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Overall, the lack of professionalism and basic courtesy made the experience unpleasant. I would not return - solely because of the service.

  Nathan was our bar tender. He was new to the position and was fantastic. He was engaging, attentive and showed pride in the work he did. He made our night great!
