At the beginning of last year, I started the process of obtaining an ITIN for my wife so we could file our taxes as a married couple. I chose Silvia Professional Tax Services because they present themselves as experienced professionals, and I specifically wanted to avoid errors or complications.
I made the payment, provided my W-2, and submitted a PDF that included both my wife’s visa and passport. I was told the documents would be sent to the IRS and that the estimated processing time would be 4 to 7 weeks.
After receiving my federal tax refund and not receiving any update about the ITIN, I called to ask about the status. I was told the application had been denied because I “sent the visa instead of the passport.” However, the document I originally submitted clearly contained both. I resent the same file and explicitly indicated that the passport should be used.
I waited again for the timeframe they provided. When I did not receive any update, I called back. This time I was told there had been an error in the paperwork and that the ITIN would need to be submitted again, with an estimated response around September or October.
I waited until that timeframe before contacting them again. At that point, I was told there was no record of any ITIN application in process and that Silvia would contact the IRS and call me back. That return call never happened.
Over the following months, the pattern repeated. I called after the deadlines they provided, and each time I was told Silvia would contact the IRS and get back to me, but I did not receive follow-up communication. Messages I sent also went unanswered.
This year, when I reached out again, I was told there was still no ITIN application on record and that we could start over. At that point, I considered filing as single so I could work with another preparer. I was then told that the refund amount as single would have been much lower than what I had already received. When I questioned the discrepancy, I was told that “possibly” the ITIN had actually been approved, which could explain the larger refund.
Throughout this process, I have received multiple inconsistent explanations:
That the issue was because I sent the visa.
That the passport was not valid.
That there was a paperwork error.
That there was no application on record.
That the ITIN may actually have been approved.
After nearly a year, I am still waiting for clarity. Each time I call, I am told Silvia is unavailable and that I will receive a return call, which has not happened on multiple occasions.
My experience has been one of lack of follow-up, communication, and clarity on a sensitive process that requires precision.
Once again, I find myself in the same cycle: I call, I am told there are inconsistencies in my case and that Silvia will contact the IRS. Then communication stops. If I call back, I am told Silvia is unavailable and that I will receive a return call as soon as possible.
I understand that if this had happened once, it could be considered a normal delay or miscommunication. However, this has happened approximately six or seven times. Each time I call, I am asked again for information I already provided at the beginning, I am told something seems unusual, that they will speak with Silvia, that they will contact the IRS, and that I will receive a call back. Time passes, and the same situation repeats.
