  I had an extremely demeaning and humiliating experience at the Flagstar Bank Rocky River branch while simply trying to open a checking account. I met with Assistant Branch Manager Andrew Schmidt and provided my Social Security number, my valid out-of-state driver’s license, and the personal information requested to open the account. I was then asked for a debit or credit card without any explanation that it was being requested as an additional form of identification. When I asked why my debit card was needed, the interaction immediately changed. Andrew told me that my ID looked fraudulent and began commenting that I appeared “nervous” and “suspicious.” I told him very clearly that I was not nervous — I was offended by the way I was being treated. Instead of explaining the bank’s verification requirements or professionally asking for additional identification, my account opening was halted and what should have been a routine banking interaction turned into approximately 25 minutes of questioning that made me feel like I was being interrogated and accused of committing fraud. I am a young man with an out-of-state license, and I walked away from this experience feeling discriminated against because of my physical appearance and or where I live. Nothing about the way I was treated made me feel like a prospective customer. I felt attacked, embarrassed, and presumed guilty of something simply for attempting to open a bank account. If additional verification was required, that could have been communicated professionally and respectfully. There is a significant difference between verifying someone’s identity and treating them like a criminal. I came into Flagstar intending to become a customer. I left feeling humiliated and discriminated against. No one should walk into a bank to open an account and leave feeling the way I did.

  I have been a customer of this bank when it was at one time known as Ohio Savings. I only recently started using the Rocky River branch. On every encounter I have been impressed with their friendliness and knowledge. Today while waiting for my turn I witnessed how kind and patient they were with an elderly customer. I have worked primarily with Kemberly and Kevin -friendly, professional, but have noted the same behavior of various staff in their interaction with other customers.

  This branch has always been great to visit. Kevin did an awesome job helping me get set up with my accounts, and Jen and Kem have been terrific on return trips. Thank you!
