  This post is to bring awareness to what I believe may have been differential treatment based on skin color. I am a new PNC customer and recently visited a branch to withdraw money from my account. I was initially told that I needed to complete a signature card and that my driver’s license number was incorrect by one digit, requiring me to come inside the branch. I then met with a gentleman who appeared to be of Indian descent. I sat in his office for approximately 45 minutes while he updated my driver’s license number and completed my signature card. When we finished, he directed me to the teller to make my withdrawal. However, the teller informed me that I could not withdraw money. The lead teller Hannah then reviewed my account and asked several verification questions, including my recent transactions and the addresses associated with my account. I also received a security code on my cellphone, which I successfully provided. Despite answering these questions correctly, I was told that I could not withdraw my own money because of “insufficient authentication.” At that point, I was understandably frustrated. I had been in the branch for more than an hour, completed multiple verification steps, and received conflicting information from several employees. I called PNC’s customer service number, and the representative explained that the branch could have used additional authentication methods, especially since my driver’s license number had just been corrected and I had not yet received a debit card for my new account. My concern is why those additional authentication methods were not offered to me at the branch. Instead, I was repeatedly questioned, inconvenienced, and ultimately denied access to my own funds after providing multiple forms of verification. This experience left me feeling embarrassed, dismissed, and concerned that I may have been treated differently because of the color of my skin. I am sharing this experience to bring awareness to the importance of consistent policies, clear communication, and fair treatment for every customer.
