July 1, 1980, marked the opening of Capitol Federal's 16th office and its entry into the Wichita market. Joe and Janet Aleshire served as the first husband and wife team to open a new location. Grand opening occurred during worst heatwave since the 1930s, but the morning of the ribbon cutting was very pleasant. As if it had been planned, the McConnell Air Force Base jets flew overhead as a Marine color guard raised the American Flag and a 9th grade trumpet trio played the National Anthem.
