About

Cemetery
The cemetery was established in 1957 by Cornelius H. Doherty, Sr. (1896-1969). Cornelius H. Doherty, Jr., served as President from 1967 until 2010, and his son, Michael H. Doherty, served as President from 2010 until 2020. All three were/are practicing attorneys and have been instrumental in establishing Virginia laws regulating cemeteries. The family's dream was to have a funeral home on the property, and the 6-acre parcel on Braddock Road where it now stands had been set aside for that purpose.

I would give 10 stars if I could. I wanted to thank Cathy Younkin for doing such a beautiful job on my Aunt Linda's funeral service. She exceeded our expectations. Thank you for going above and beyond. She is fantastic. Ms. Younkin helped me coordinate this all the way from California. My aunt passed away unexpectedly, and the loss was incredibly overwhelming for our family. Because my parents were so far away and very low tech savvy, every detail had to be handled through phone calls, snapshots and the occasion email that I could print on paper so they could read it, which made an already painful time even harder. I stayed with them throughout the process—taking photos, sharing updates, and helping communicate each decision as plans slowly came together. She showed extraordinary compassion and patience, truly going above and beyond when we needed it most. Despite her never being able to coordinate this with any of us in person, she took so much care with every detail, making sure everything was beautiful, meaningful, and exactly what our family needed. we flew in the day of the funeral with everything ready to go so we could spend the time to mourn. Her dedication and kindness and time, brought comfort during one of the most heartbreaking moments of our lives, and we will never forget the care she showed our family. We purchased the doves, the organ, the food during tea and crumpets so our family and friends could gather and be with each other. The big makeup package, the videos, the prayer cards and the catholic priest (they asked what denomination we wanted) also the flowers. Thank you again.

Cathy Younkin was great. Very friendly, great personality, and did everything she could to get what I was looking for. She took me around the park and show me everything I have in questions and more. She showed me all the posible options at the park, provided me with the selection maps of the available properties, break down everything when we sat and do the paperwork. She'll work with you to get what you needed. I got great discount from FMP at the final settle. Everything was transparent. Very easy and smooth transaction and got everything done in 2 visits. Thanks Cathy!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting with Cathy Younkin of Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home for an advance discussion of my final needs. Cathy was kind, patient, personable, and easy to talk with. And perhaps most importantly, she was very knowledgeable about everything concerning final needs; she was able to answer every question that I had, and I was aware of her sincerity and understanding with everything that we discussed. After our meeting, after all the advance arrangements had been made, I had a tremendous feeling of relief that those advance plans had been made. I would not want my family, or my wife's family, to be left with the expense or the burden of decision after my passing. Now that that burden has been lifted from me and from my family, I have only to think of how I want to live my remaining years, and I hope that it may be in ways to help others. As a musician, I hope that I may bring beauty to others through the music that I play. Thank you, Cathy, for your kindness and your guidance through the planning process. :)

We had a wonderful experience at Fairfax Memorial Park, from start to finish. We planned and execute Mom's service at this site and they supported and guided us through all of the decisions we needed to make and the options available to us. They connected us with a pastor to conduct the ceremony, helped us select the right urn and plot for our Mom, and helped us organize a ceremony that was so authentically reflective of who she was as a person. Our entire family is so thankful for all of the support we received from Fairfax Memorial Park. Our loss was very unexpected so we weren't even sure where to start. Everyone we worked with made this so much easier to manage. I'm not sure how we would have gotten through the first few weeks without their support. Cannot suggest more strongly.

My twin passed away in November, 2025. She was single and wanted to be buried with our grandfather. I contacted Fairfax Memorial Park where my grandfather is buried. The receptionist connected me with Mr. Tom deSabla. He couldn't have been nicer to me, and since this was the initial phone call, he answered all my questions as well as informing me of things that I needed to do on my end. At the end our phone call, he told me to not hesitate to call him no matter if I needed help with something or just to ask more questions, without any fear on my end that I would be bothering him. Everything went very smoothly and I did make a lot of phone calls asking all kinds of questions, and he never ever was upset or irritated with me, and again told me each time to just feel free to call. No question is a silly one and he was happy to help. He did his end of the job perfectly, and always with a smile in his voice. I cannot recommend Fairfax Memorial enough and Mr. Tom de Sabla. Thank you so much during a stressful time for me, and God Bless. Margaret Overend

Frequently Asked Questions About Fairfax Memorial Park

How long does the actual cremation take?

It depends on the weight of the individual. For an average size adult, cremation takes from 3 to 4 hours at normal operating temperature between 1,650 degrees F to 2,000 degrees F.

What happens after the cremation is complete?

All bone fragments, which are very brittle, as well as inorganic metal items are swept into the front of the cremation chamber and into a stainless steel cooling pan. All non-consumed items, such as metal from clothing, artificial joints, and dental implants, are separated from the cremated remains. This separation is accomplished through visual inspection as well as using a strong magnet for smaller and minute metallic objects. Items such as dental gold and silver are non-recoverable and are commingled in with the cremated remains. Remaining bone fragments are then processed in a machine to a consistent size and placed into a temporary or permanent urn, selected by the family.
