  I have been with the Y for only a couple months in the first round of swim lessons. My five year-old had she did great with her teacher. This round with the teacher was horrendous. he kept singling my daughter out in front of all the kids and parents because she wouldn’t put her head underwater and I talked to the manager about it and she said oh we don’t teach that way I will definitely touch base with the teacher two more lessons go by and it still wasn’t really changing this last lesson we had yesterday she was told to go underwater she didn’t want to, and then I tried to convince her I got down on her level and tried to convince her and she doesn’t want to, and he said that he was trying to explain to her that if she doesn’t do it, she doesn’t get to do anything else during the lesson he also said that’s what his boss told him. so he went on to teach and always skipped my daughter which she caught onto that and she started to get upset and she started to cry, and she cried pretty much the whole rest of the lesson on my lap.

  I've been a member here for years and come five days a week, and I still think it's one of the best values in Pierce County. The weight room was recently redone and it shows: six full squat racks with deadlift platforms, plenty of plates, and a turf area for sled pushes and carries. You rarely wait for a rack, and when you do, people are quick to offer to work in. The culture on the floor is what keeps me coming back. It's serious lifters and beginners side by side, everyone racks their weights, and nobody is there to show off. Beyond the weight room, the facility has everything: a great pool, a full schedule of classes, and pickup basketball that runs most evenings, with Saturdays being the best games in the area. The staff are friendly, know the regulars by name, and keep the place clean and running smoothly. What sets this Y apart, though, is what it does for the community. Kids have a safe place to spend their afternoons, and families can participate regardless of income. I'd honestly keep paying my dues even if I stopped coming, because this is an organization that does real good for the people around it. If you're looking for a gym, this one is better than most. If you're looking for a place that actually makes the neighborhood better, this is it. Not a gym designed to make profit but to serve the community. Five stars, without hesitation.
