The cemetery was established in 1957 by Cornelius H. Doherty, Sr. (1896-1969). Cornelius H. Doherty, Jr., served as President from 1967 until 2010, and his son, Michael H. Doherty, served as President from 2010 until 2020. All three were/are practicing attorneys and have been instrumental in establishing Virginia laws regulating cemeteries.
The family's dream was to have a funeral home on the property, and the 6-acre parcel on Braddock Road where it now stands had been set aside for that purpose.
Very disappointed with the care and maintenance of my mother’s gravesite. It has been over 20 months since her burial, and despite numerous calls, emails, and promises from management, the site remains sunken, patchy, and poorly maintained. We have repeatedly been given excuses ranging from weather to wildlife, yet no lasting corrective action has been taken. A cemetery should provide families with peace of mind and a dignified resting place for their loved ones. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience. I cannot recommend this cemetery based on the lack of follow-through and ongoing neglect of a fully paid burial plot.
I would like to thank the cemetery management for their prompt attention and corrective action regarding my mother’s gravesite. After expressing my concerns about the condition and maintenance of the site, management responded and took meaningful steps to address the issues. The improvements made have restored the dignity and appearance of my mother’s resting place, which means a great deal to our family.
I appreciate their responsiveness, professionalism, and commitment to resolving the matter. Thank you for listening to our concerns and taking action.

I need to say Cathy Younkin at Fairfax Memorial Park has made my pre arrangement just as I asked making my out of town arrangement for me not difficult. I can say she is very sensitive and yet very professional in giving me peace of mind, and helping saving family and others from making many emotional decisions at the time of death. God bless you, John

Pre-planning my funeral with the first step in acquiring my burial place was not only a positive experience, but one I am so very thankful I began with a huge relief. Cathy Younkin, Advanced Planning Advisor, at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home was professional, knowledgeable and courteous in guiding me with all my questions answered as well. I am hoping anyone reading this will consider pre-planning for there is much to know, consider and chose.

Sincere gratitude to director Tom deSabla for his compassionate guidance in arranging my future burial site alongside my sister and brother in law. I presented Tom with quite a challenge as I live across the country. Our initial phone conversations were lengthy but never rushed. Documents prepared by Tom were immediate, clear, and concise.
When I was recently able to meet Tom face to face at Fairfax Memorial Park with my sister and brother in law, we all benefited from his continuing kindness, knowledge, and advice in finalizing all aspects of our future burials.
We now have a sense of peace for ourselves and for our family in the DC area.
Thank you, Tom, from the bottom of my heart.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fairfax Memorial Park
How long does the actual cremation take?
It depends on the weight of the individual. For an average size adult, cremation takes from 3 to 4 hours at normal operating temperature between 1,650 degrees F to 2,000 degrees F.
What happens after the cremation is complete?
All bone fragments, which are very brittle, as well as inorganic metal items are swept into the front of the cremation chamber and into a stainless steel cooling pan. All non-consumed items, such as metal from clothing, artificial joints, and dental implants, are separated from the cremated remains. This separation is accomplished through visual inspection as well as using a strong magnet for smaller and minute metallic objects. Items such as dental gold and silver are non-recoverable and are commingled in with the cremated remains. Remaining bone fragments are then processed in a machine to a consistent size and placed into a temporary or permanent urn, selected by the family.
In what kind of container are the cremated remains returned?
The cremated remains are placed in a basic container at no charge to you. Or they may be placed in the urn of your choice from our large selection of urns available for purchase.
What can be done with the cremated remains?
There are many options. Remains can be buried in a cemetery lot or cremation garden, inurned in a columbarium, kept at home, or scattered on private property. Our staff will be happy to discuss these options with you and make any arrangements.
