As a young teen, my parents took me to our bishop in this building to seek counsel about an assault I experienced.
The bishop had my parents leave the room, closed the door behind them, and had me describe what happened. For about 30-45 minutes he asked for more and more specific and graphic details, not offering guidance or support, just wanted to hear more details. Then he had my parents come back in and told me I was "forgiven". No police report was made. Unfortunately though he didn't tell the law, he did tell his wife who shared it with other members of the ward, though I doubt he told her about all his follow up questions. He is still an honored member of the church and continues to hold professional and ecclesiastical leadership positions.
There were about five people in that building that actually lived the way Jesus asked, who still remain in my heart. But largely, the rest of the ward was catty, bitter, full of gossip and ulterior motives.
Not a safe place for anyone, but especially not children. I have a beautiful life that I love now, but it's despite growing up in the ward- not because of it.
