Earlier this year, my siblings and I were faced with a task we never imagined we would have to prepare for—choosing and purchasing a headstone for our dad.
I reached out to Victor, shared our vision and our budget, and he truly brought our vision to life. From the very beginning, he was kind, patient, and incredibly understanding. With five siblings involved, you can imagine the number of opinions we had! We all had something we wanted added, something we wanted changed, or a “what about this?”
Victor showed us so much grace and patience throughout the entire process, and the end result was absolutely perfect.
Thank you, Victor, for going above and beyond to make our vision a reality. You helped us create something beautiful and meaningful to honor our dad, and we are so grateful for the care you put into every detail.

Frequently Asked Questions About Victor with Johnston Monument
What factors affect monument pricing in East Texas?
Material choice, monument size, engraving complexity, and foundation requirements all influence cost. Granite type varies significantly in price, and larger monuments require deeper foundations in East Texas clay soil. Custom artwork and detailed lettering add to engraving time and precision work needed.
How long does it take to install a monument after ordering?
Timeline depends on granite sourcing, engraving complexity, and weather conditions. Custom designs require artwork approval before engraving begins. Foundation work needs dry ground, so heavy rain periods in East Texas can delay installation scheduling.
What's the difference between granite and marble for headstones?
Granite resists weathering and maintains engraving clarity for generations, while marble is softer and deteriorates faster in humid climates. East Texas humidity accelerates marble erosion, causing lettering to fade within decades. Granite remains the most durable choice for long-term legibility.
Can you add engraving to an existing monument?
Yes, additional names, dates, or artwork can be engraved on most existing monuments. The monument may need removal for shop engraving if space is limited or detail is complex. Surface condition and remaining blank space determine whether on-site engraving is possible.
Do cemeteries require specific monument sizes or styles?
Most cemeteries have regulations governing monument dimensions, placement, and foundation depth. Some restrict certain styles or require flush markers instead of upright monuments. Check cemetery rules before ordering, as non-compliant monuments may be rejected during installation.
What's involved in setting a monument foundation?
Foundation work includes excavating to required depth, pouring a concrete base, and allowing proper cure time before monument placement. Clay soil in the Lufkin area requires adequate depth to prevent shifting. Foundation size matches monument dimensions with added perimeter for stability.
How do you clean and maintain granite monuments?
Use plain water and a soft brush for routine cleaning, avoiding harsh chemicals that damage sealant. Biological growth like lichen needs gentle removal without scraping stone surfaces. Annual cleaning prevents buildup that obscures engraving and preserves stone appearance.
What information do you need to create a monument design?
Full names, birth and death dates, epitaph text, and any artwork preferences start the design process. Photos of meaningful symbols or specific lettering styles help create personalized designs. Cemetery name and plot location ensure compliance with specific site regulations.
Can monuments be moved to a different cemetery?
Monuments can be relocated, but the process requires professional removal, foundation abandonment at the original site, and new foundation work at the destination. Older monuments need condition assessment before moving, as age-related weaknesses may cause damage during relocation.
Why do some monuments settle or tilt over time?
Inadequate foundation depth, soil erosion, and ground movement from clay soil expansion cause settling. East Texas clay shifts with moisture changes, stressing shallow foundations. Monuments without proper concrete bases tilt faster than those with foundations extending below frost and moisture variation zones.
