I had a disappointing experience at the YMCA in Rockaway Beach. Although it may work well for others, it didn't meet our family's needs. We attempted to cancel our membership 15 days before our renewal date and went in person on the 1st, but were informed that we should have done so by the 31st, which was confusing to me as our membership renews on the 15th, so I thought I could cancel on the first. This was just an honest mistake. I was trying to follow the rules.. The front desk staff could not assist us and directed us to business cards since no manager was available on weekends. When I called the numbers on the cards, they led back to the front desk, leaving me without help. I was advised to send an email instead.
When I expressed my confusion, the staff accused me of being rude and cursing when yes I had dropped one F-word when expressing my frustration about their cancellation policy, which they greatly blew out of proportion and detracted from the issues at hand making it more about attacking my character and chose of words versus giving me assistance. They asked why I wanted to cancel, which really was also just a distraction, but I indulge them and I explained that I wanted to cancel due to many small things : an injury I sustained at the pool, where a white grate that surrounds the pool collapsed underfoot, causing me to fall while holding my child. I also mentioned that my toddler found the pool too cold. At one of the main reasons we signed up was that they said they had private adult swim lessons, but after we had signed up and we had emailed the head of the swim school we were informed that they did not have any availability. Instead of addressing my concerns, the staff suggested all the ways that I was to blame- example - “I should have reported my injury in person to the front desk”, which was impractical given my situation of bleeding and holding my toddler and just trying to get us home safely. I did briefly speak to someone on the pool deck and emailed about the incident when I was home safely so that they could check and make sure that the pool deck was safe and noting was loses or broken so the others would not get hurt in the same way.
During my conversation with the front desk, it seemed to be more of a criticism of me and what I could’ve done differently than just listening to my concerns or helping me.
Additionally, the guest pass system was ineffective for us (as I hope to use my guest pass for my parents to help me bring the toddler to the pool, but guest are not allowed to use the pool ) and I was misinformed about the daycare services regarding screen time, despite my inquiries and I was told there was no screen time during their daycare. I did return finding my toddler watching an iPad for the first time.
It was just a lot of little small things like this where it just didn’t feel welcoming or just didn’t work for our family. Again, we hope others probably have a very different experience.
Overall, while the facilities appear decent, the confusing rules and lack of understanding from the staff were frustrating. They seemed more focused on placing blame rather than listening to our concerns. I hope the YMCA can improve its policies and customer service in the future. I look forward to when NYC’s new “click to cancel” rules come into effect in October and I hope this is one of the first places that get their policies up-to-date.
