The hotel had everything you needed, but nothing more. The location was excellent, and I knew what to expect from the room. What I didn't expect were the cockroaches and the fact that none of the three toilets on the entire floor worked. Two of the three showers were out of order, and only two of the four faucets worked.
The service was similar: you got exactly what you needed, but nothing beyond that. Overall, the location was the hotel's only real highlight.
A superb, fantastic location to stay when you're visiting NYC. Easy access to Columbus Circle, great food nearby, and grocery stores if you need to pick up more long term things. Being in Manhattan for a budget price was awesome.
All that being said, if you're going to stay here: request to be on as high a floor as you can. The higher floors have been renovated and have private bathrooms, but the 8th floor feels straight out of a prison movie. Make sure that you bring shower shoes: the bathrooms are cleaned but just from the sheer amount of people using them through the day, they're going to be dirty.
Big perk is having access to the pool and the gym during the day, especially to use their shower facilities. Even though there's a lot of people in and out, it felt cleaner than the 8th floor...but maybe anything, for the rest of my days, will always feel cleaner than the 8th floor.

I went here for their gym, top tier! The gym at the Y is almost like a planet fitness, made the people actually serious at working out, put it a good amount of all non cardio equipment, and had friendly staff.
I worked out here for almost exactly a year, and never had any complaints. The manager has always been extremely rude, but the employees always make up for that.
If you want to know exactly what sets the Y apart from other gyms (like planet fitness), the Y uses real wipes and not just paper towels for cleaning the machines!

Our main purpose of this hostel booking is the location point, this hostel is great point for tourists and couple, we had book double sharing room which was quite small but was OK for us. the sharing bathroom was good, neat and clean, comfortable but in early morning was quite rush. the hostel does not provide or any option for food (only on-site snack/drink vending machines, small lobby coffee) so one must visit outside for food. there are plenty of in budget restaurant out side in walking 5 mnt distance like near Upper West Side and Columbus Circle and also Starbuck too.
We are an English couple, aged 59 & 64, and finished a week long stay here on 11th June 2026.
We stayed in a standard double room, with use of a shared bathroom.
We have stayed at Youth Hostels in the UK before and this place is a similar environment.
It's not a hotel so not really fair to compare it to one.
We thought it was excellent value for money, and would definitely stay there again if in New York.
The location is brilliant. A less than 5 minute walk and you are in Central Park. 10 mins and you are at the Columbus Circle subway.
Our room was, as expected, basic. It had everything we needed:- 2 towels, a TV, air conditioning, comfortable double bed, desk & chair.
On our floor the communal female bathroom was accessible by entering a key code. There were 3 toilets, 4 sinks with large mirror above, and 3 showers. The shower screens were frosted glass. The shower doors and toilet doors didn't lock, but it felt very safe and all the women I encountered were friendly and respectful of each other and their privacy. The area was cleaned regularly and never ran out of toilet paper or hand soap.
I hung my towel and clothes over the top of the shower screen when showering. They stayed dry. Hot water was plentiful provided you turn the handle all the way around instead of stopping as soon as water flows.
Also on our floor were 2 vending machines containing drinks & snacks.
Water fountains for refilling water bottles are at reception and 4th floor.
Gym facilities and use of the swimming pool included in room price. We didn't use them so can't review.
Staff were friendly & helpful.
The only negative is the self closing bedroom and bathroom doors close quite loudly, so the sound tends to echo along the tiled corridors. However, exhausted after exploring each day, we slept soundly.
I never had to queue to use any bathroom facilities and often had the entire room to myself.
