In case you were wondering, inside the temple there are 4 main "ordinances" that members take part in: baptism for the dead, the Initiatory, the Endowment, and marriage Sealings. We'll focus on the Endowment since it is the most unclear and lengthy ordinance.
During the Endowment participants wear white ceremonial clothing, including a green fig-leaf apron, a sash, hat, and robe arranged in specific positions. During the ritual, they repeat memorized phrases and make promises which include obeying God, wearing their sacred undergarments and women promise to obey their husbands. In previous times, everyone would promise to refrain from loud laughter and defend the Church with their lives.
The most important and final part of the Endowment is when members stand in front of a veil that symbolizes the divide between the mortal and eternal worlds and exchange ritual handshakes through the curtain called tokens of the priesthood. Members use secret temple names to identify themselves and give the handshakes to a worker on the other side of the curtain before passing through. This symbolizes their passing through the veil into the Celestial Kingdom.
The distinctive clothing, exact spoken lines, and token handshakes closely parallel ritual structures found in Freemasonry. Joseph Smith was a Mason for a few months before he dictated the Temple Endowment ceremony.
