- KSKaitlin ShanksAug 22, 20261.0These are the requirements for attending an LDS church: straight, cisgender, married with kids OR willing to marry a church member and start having kids. This might not sound unusual for most churches, but what sets the LDS apart is that they will explicitly lie to you and tell you that they're queer-friendly, ANYONE can join, it's fine to be openly queer in this church, nobody is homophobic there, blah blah--and they might even convince you that's the truth, until you start attending and you hear them insulting you and your community, preaching that you don't deserve basic human rights, bashing the rights that your community spent decades fighting for, proclaiming that you're "confused" about "real" families, insisting that you don't deserve to have a family of your own, and telling you that you're disabled, you're mentally ill and your existence is inherently inferior to theirs. Of course, if you bring this up to them, they'll immediately deny it and insist that EVERYONE is welcome, even you. Some of them will even go as far as to pretend to be allies with a nod and a fake smile--until it's time to actually be an ally, and then they're the first to run off and leave you on your own. You can take the risk and put up with their insults, mockery and humiliation...or you can just save yourself the trouble and keep your distance.
