I want to take the time to acknowledge how absolutely amazing the team at Chatman-Harris Funeral Home – West (Reisterstown Road) has been during one of the most difficult times of my family's life.
I first contacted the funeral home on Sunday, July 19, 2026, late in the evening and had the pleasure of speaking with Ms. Quiana Harris. Initially, I had every intention of using Wylie Funeral Home or Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Services because those are the funeral homes my family has traditionally used. However, my grandmother encouraged me to at least call Chatman-Harris since they had previously handled my uncle's services.
From the very first conversation, Ms. Quiana completely changed my perspective. I had countless questions, and she patiently walked me through their service packages, explained the funeral planning process, and never once made me feel rushed. She was warm, knowledgeable, intentional, and genuinely listened. Even though I still believed I would choose one of the other funeral homes, her professionalism and kindness made me willing to schedule an appointment for July 20, 2026, at 3:30pm.
When I arrived, I realized I had gone to the wrong Chatman-Harris location. I was greeted by a gentleman who immediately offered to help me. I respectfully explained that I was there specifically to meet Ms. Quiana because she had made such a great first impression on me. He assured me he could assist me, but I remained a little guarded. After speaking with Ms. Quiana by phone, she told me the staff there was fully capable of helping me, so I decided to stay.
I'm so glad I did.
The gentleman who assisted my family was patient, compassionate, incredibly knowledgeable, and answered every single question I had without hesitation. He never rushed us and treated us with genuine care and respect. By the end of our meeting, I knew this was the funeral home I wanted to trust with my brother's services.
Then came the surprise.
As we were wrapping up our conversation, I learned that the gentleman who had helped us was actually Mr. Cullen Harris, the owner.
That completely sealed the deal for me.
At no point did he introduce himself as the owner or use his title to gain credibility. In fact, when I questioned whether he could assist me because I was looking for Ms. Quiana, he never took offense or tried to pull the "I'm the owner" card. Instead, he simply earned my respect through his professionalism, humility, patience, and exceptional customer service.
To me, that's leadership!
True leadership isn't about titles or power. It's about meeting people where they are, remaining humble, and serving others with excellence. Mr. Harris demonstrated every one of those qualities.
The experience didn't stop there.
The following day (without me even finalizing the invoice), I urgently needed two documents emailed to me. I called the funeral home, and Ms. Quiana immediately prepared and sent everything I needed. Anyone who has planned a funeral knows the type of work I requested is typically done after arrangements are finalized/PAID, yet she or Mr. Harris never hesitated to help.
Think about that.
For three days, they answered my phone calls, responded to my text messages, patiently addressed every concern I had, and treated me like family before receiving a single dollar from me.
That level of service is almost unheard of today.
My brother's funeral is scheduled for August 1, 2026, and because of the care, compassion, and professionalism they've already shown, I know my family is in excellent hands.
One funny moment: I had been calling Ms. Quiana "Ms. Keonna" the entire time, and she never once corrected me. I only later realized I had been saying her name wrong! That says so much about her gracious spirit.
Thank you, Mr. Cullen Harris, Ms. Quiana Harris, and the entire Chatman-Harris family for treating my family with dignity, compassion, patience, and genuine care during one of the hardest moments of our lives.
This is what Black excellence looks like.
You really made things bearable🙏🏾
Warm Regards, Sashay Wonson
