I was disappointed with the condition of the cemetery during our recent visit at the end of June. When we visited back in 2015, it seemed much better maintained. This time, the grass was so overgrown that many of the headstones were difficult—sometimes nearly impossible—to find. It’s such an important historic cemetery, and it deserves better care and preservation. I hope it receives more regular maintenance in the future so visitors can appreciate the history there.

Beautiful and peaceful site but a lot of damage from the derecho (storm) that hit on June 29, 2023. Multiple trees toppled over in the cemetery and the path to it.

It was great to visit this cemetery. I really appreciate that a building was made with a list of the names of those that were buried there, because most of the headstones are severely weathered, deteriorated, and unreadable. A few seem to have been replaced, but it seems that most graves are not even marked. If there are any maps or records of where people are buried, it would be nice to add that to the information there. Our family is looking into ways of contributing to restoration efforts, since we have ancestors there--we would encourage others to do likewise
There was definitely a peaceful, reverent, & solemn spirit about this place.
This historical site is my favorite in all of Nauvoo. The scenery is beautiful, and the cemetery itself has many interesting features. This is an excellent place to ponder quietly or honor ancestors. The historical cemetery is a great spot for hiking and alone time. (They should probably have more pictures shown)
