About

Church
*Please visit the temple website for open hours and appointments.* Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are considered houses of God, a place of holiness and peace separate from the preoccupations of the world. They provide a place where Church members make formal promises and commitments to God. They are also the place where the highest sacraments of the faith occur — the marriage of couples and the "sealing" of families for eternity. Temples serve as the only place where ceremonies such as baptism and eternal marriage can be performed on behalf of those who have died. Temples point Latter-day Saints to Jesus Christ and their eventual life with Him.

The Laie Hawaii Temple is a stunning piece of architecture. The grounds are immaculately maintained and make for a lovely, peaceful place to walk. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this place means more to me than just beautiful scenery. We believe temples are literally the house of the Lord — that He has always directed His people to build these sacred structures, where faithful members perform sacred ordinances for themselves and for their ancestors who have passed on. We believe the Lord's presence is felt in His temples in a way unlike any other place of worship. This isn't a new concept — it stretches back to the portable tabernacle Moses and the Israelites carried through the wilderness, and later to Solomon's temple in Jerusalem, which was destroyed and rebuilt more than once over the centuries. The Book of Mormon likewise describes God's followers building and worshiping in temples, and we see the practice of temple building as a mark of Christ's true church being restored in any age. In modern times, that restoration began with the Kirtland Temple, the first built in this dispensation, and it's continued with temples now dedicated all over the world — Laie being one of them. Visiting here isn't just sightseeing for me — it's sacred ground.

Such an amazing historic and cultural center! I love exploring the incredibly beautiful gardens and learning more about the culture at the visitors center. It’s fun meeting volunteer missionaries from all over the world there too. It’s amazing that they not only volunteer, but pay for their mission expenses too!
