My experience with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was extremely disappointing, and unfortunately, I left feeling more unwelcome than welcomed.
From the moment I interacted with members of the church, I felt that there was an expectation that I should consider converting to their religion. Rather than simply allowing me to learn about the church or participate without pressure, the conversations repeatedly turned toward encouraging me to accept their beliefs and become a member. There is a significant difference between politely sharing your faith with someone who is interested and making a visitor feel like conversion is the expected outcome.
What bothered me most was the lack of a genuinely welcoming atmosphere. I expected people who represent a church centered around community, service, and fellowship to make visitors feel comfortable regardless of their religious background or whether they had any intention of converting. Instead, I felt like I was being treated primarily as a potential convert rather than as a person who deserved to be welcomed without conditions.
Religious outreach is perfectly reasonable when someone asks for it or expresses genuine interest. However, it becomes uncomfortable when a person feels pressured or repeatedly steered toward joining a faith they did not come there intending to adopt. I believe people should be free to visit, ask questions, and form their own opinions without feeling that they are being recruited.
Unfortunately, my overall impression was that acceptance was tied too closely to whether I was willing to embrace the church's beliefs. That made the experience feel impersonal and exclusionary rather than compassionate and welcoming.
I respect the right of the church and its members to practice and share their faith, but I also believe visitors deserve the same respect if they choose not to convert. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend the church to someone looking for a welcoming environment where they can simply learn and make their own decisions without pressure.
