  I am very disappointed with our experience at Champions Camp at Narcoossee Elementary. Within the first two weeks of camp, my 5-year-old child experienced three separate incidents involving staff yelling at him. After the first incident, I shared my concerns with camp staff and was informed that the yelling was not directed at my child, but at another child. Regardless of who the yelling was directed toward, my concern was that this type of communication was upsetting for a young child and created an environment that felt intimidating. I spoke with staff again after another incident, but the behavior continued. The final incident involved my child being yelled at and receiving a timeout after taking extra time in the bathroom because he needed to properly clean himself after a bowel movement. He explained the situation to the teacher, but no apology was given and the timeout was not removed. After multiple attempts to have these concerns addressed, this was the point where I decided to withdraw from the camp. Since starting camp, I have noticed changes in my child’s behavior, including anxiety and nightmares related to attending. He has shared that he enjoys many parts of camp but does not like the way staff speak to him or being yelled at. My child has not had behavior concerns at his school or his previous daycare and camp. His teachers have consistently described him as a child who listens, follows directions, and responds well to guidance. While children need reminders and redirection, communication should be age-appropriate, supportive, and respectful. Parents trust camps with their children’s emotional well-being, and I hope Champions Camp takes this feedback seriously and evaluates the training they provide as well as how staff communicate with young children.
