- JJJessMay 24, 20261.0I came to this counseling center hoping for healing, guidance, and support for my marriage. Unfortunately, I cannot say this experience helped my marriage, and my husband is now asking for a divorce. Although we only attended one marriage counseling session, I left feeling discouraged and confused. The session felt more like an opportunity for us to vent rather than a structured counseling session focused on solutions, reconciliation, or repairing the marriage. Matt spoke very little during the session, and I never truly understood how the Gottman Method was being applied or how it was intended to help restore the relationship. I also felt uncomfortable with the fact that Matt was already serving as my husband’s individual therapist prior to our marriage session, as I believe that can make it difficult to maintain balance and objectivity in couples counseling. After continuing individual counseling there separately, my husband later came home and told me he wanted a divorce. While I understand no counselor is solely responsible for the outcome of a marriage, I personally left with the impression that the focus was more on individual happiness than on helping repair what was broken within the marriage. Every couple’s experience is different, but I would encourage others to carefully explore all counseling options beforehand.
