I’d like to preface this by saying there were a couple of staff members who went above and beyond for my grandfather. The biggest issue is that this facility is severely understaffed, especially overnight. Night shift often had only ONE registered nurse and 1/4 of the daytime staff, when it was already slow to get help. Unless your family member is reasonably able to care for themselves, I can’t recommend this place. My grandfather was too unstable to safely stand on his own, yet overnight he was often forced to get out of bed and walk himself to the bathroom because no one came to help after repeated calls. We also had constant issues with his catheter because staff would not follow instructions that it needed more frequent flushing than normal, leading to repeated blockages and leaks. He would then sit in urine for HOURS while requests to clean him were delayed or ignored. On his last day there, physical therapy stopped early around 10am because his blood pressure dropped. We were told he would get a chest X-ray, but nothing else was done. He slept most of the day and repeatedly said he was too weak to stand. We kept being told to wait for the X-ray. By 5pm, we demanded he be sent to the hospital for a proper evaluation. After giving us attitude for asking to go, they finally sent in a nurse who — for the FIRST TIME ALL DAY — listened to his lungs, heard rattling, and agreed he needed to go to the hospital. Why that wasn’t checked seven hours earlier, I’ll never understand. My grandfather is unfortunately no longer with us, and because of this experience, none of our family or friends will ever be recommended to come here.

So so experience. Like many facilities you have to watch them closely. Awesome facility if your loved one can advocate for themselves. If they can not, look elsewhere. My mom’s roommate fell right in front of us when the staff wasn’t around. There was no urgency to get the patient off the floor. She was eventually evaluated by the staff. We had trouble regulating my mom’s BP from dropping the first few days. Took a lot of advocacy with the doctor since mom felt unheard. First week was rough but smoother afterwards as she became stronger, more aware and able to advocate for herself. Family lived close so many times we would feed her because the food was not good. All in all, the facility is okay. Most of the staff are kind and caring. No facility is perfect and neither is any family member.

They will take care of the patient. So don’t worry there. But some things to know if you have to deal with Montewese: 1. There is not one person in charge of your loved one’s care. It can be very difficult to find the right person to ask about what’s going on (treatment, general schedule, food, basic needs like another blanket, equipment that has to be ordered, transitioning, back home, etc.). I suggest making a note of people’s names, and their duties, and ask for them directly once you know who does what. There are staff that take basic care, different staff that do PT, different staff that evaluate health and make orders for meds, different staff that coordinate admission and discharge, even different staff that transition patients from their rooms to the PT area downstairs and back. 2. There is zero sense of urgency among any of the staff. To be fair, it’s because that isn’t their goal. So trying to meeting with someone in particular at a specific time, is not going to happen. They’ll get to you when they get to you. 3. Most of the schedule is “as needed” vs at set times. Example: Physical therapy times can be all over the map, depending on what else is going on with other patients. 4. It does not seem to be a priority to inform patients about what’s happening when. The patients are just THERE, doing the Montowese routine, until Montewese determines they are ready to leave. NOTE: It’s easy to mistrust this since they make more money the longer the patient stays, however I don’t think this is the root of their lack of urgency. They just don’t rush things. 5. Most staff do not communicate or interact with patients as much as they do “tolerate” them. Extremely limited effort to connect with patients, ensure they understand things, etc. Staff often talk to patients as if they are children or even not in the room. Some of this is a byproduct of dealing with patients all day, but if your loved one is expecting to be treated like an adult, it will be a vicious cycle where they will expect it, react poorly when they don’t receive it, then receive worse and worse personal treatment from staff as a result. So I recommend informing your loved one that it’s going to be a while, they’ll have lots of random faces popping in and out, what’s next will be unclear (including when you can leave) and to remember everyone’s name, what they do, and treat them right. Facility has all the equipment a rehab place needs and is clean and safe.
