I’ve been attending and active in the LDS Church for almost 6 years. My first ward had its challenges, but the missionaries who encouraged me to return to church were genuinely kind and made me feel welcomed(I was baptised at 18 but left due to sanctimonious behavior in the Mesa AZ ward(s)
After over 5 yrs at my Phoenix ward, I moved to this ward district. It was at this location that my experience changed dramatically.
When I transferred, I was told that rides to church were pre-arranged since transportation is difficult(single parent & wheelchair bound)
Despite that assurance, I only received rides twice and have largely been left to figure things out on my own. Since moving to this ward, I haven’t had a single visit from the missionaries or much outreach at all.
As a single mother, my life revolves around caring for my son, managing frequent medical appointments, and juggling financial hardship. At one point, I apparently signed up to feed the missionaries at this ward, but I honestly have no memory of doing so. When I realized I had missed it, I felt terrible. From that point on, it seemed like my Ministering Sister stopped reaching out altogether. Whether intentional or not, that’s how it felt, and it left me feeling isolated instead of supported.
The hardest part has been watching my son lose interest in attending church. He is a deacon, but because there aren’t other boys his age in this ward, he hasn’t been able to fully participate in the way we expected. Instead of feeling included, he feels like there’s no place for him, and as a parent, that’s heartbreaking.
I understand that every ward is different and that no congregation is perfect. I also know there are many wonderful people in the Church. But my experience in this ward has been one of feeling overlooked rather than cared for. Christ taught compassion, inclusion, and ministering to those who struggle. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the experience my son and I have had here.
My hope is simply that this ward takes a closer look at how newcomers, single parents, families with limited resources, and members who need a little extra support are welcomed. The strongest message a church can send isn’t through its teachings—it’s through how it treats people who are quietly struggling.
