St George’s Anglican church was founded in 1843. Volunteers built a wooden frame church and the first service was held on October 14, 1843.
The present building was constructed in 1908, by Architects Louis Auguste Amos and Arthur Cox. The first service being held on October 14, 1908. The building was consecrated by Bishop Farthing in 1922. The church was built in the Collegiate Gothic style of the old English universities with a Gothic tower which raises 66 feet high. The Victoria Hall was built on the side in 1898 but the building was destroyed by fire in 1978 and was replaced by the present hall in 1981. The church contains many historical memorials, stained-glass windows and the Colours of the old 79th Shepherd Highlanders.
