  I’ve hesitated for a long time to share this, but I feel ready to speak about our family’s experience at Eastgate Academy. My child attended this center for a short period of time (2024/2025), and during that time there were two incidents that left me deeply shaken about her safety. The first happened when she was only 8 months old. I received a call from the center explaining that water beads were being used during a sensory activity and the container had broken open. I was told staff were not sure whether my infant may have ingested any because they "stepped out". As many parents know, water beads can be extremely dangerous if swallowed. Hearing that my 8-month-old had been around them and that staff couldn’t confirm whether she had ingested one was terrifying. The resolution I was given was that they would focus on more food-grade sensory activities going forward. As a parent, it was hard to accept that something with that level of risk had been used with infants in the first place. The second incident happened shortly before we ultimately withdrew our child. One Friday afternoon after picking her up, I was unpacking her things at home when a prescription pain pill fell out of her blanket. I cannot fully describe the panic and anger I felt in that moment. I immediately contacted the administrator because I needed to understand how something like that could end up in my child’s belongings. At first, the response seemed concerned and I was told the situation would be looked into and that I would hear back by Monday morning. When I hadn’t received any update by Monday afternoon, I reached out again. Shortly after that, a general email reminder was sent to parents about being careful with medication in bags. When I later spoke with the administrator in person, I was told they had checked the building and spoken with teachers but could not determine where the pill came from. The explanation offered was that it may have fallen out of someone’s purse and somehow ended up with my child’s things. Those two situations were incredibly alarming for me as a parent. After the second incident, I no longer felt confident that my child was safe there. Ultimately, that loss of trust is what led our family to make the decision to leave. At the time, I did not give forthcoming information about the reasoning behind out decision out of fear that my child's safety would again be jeopardized. I’m sharing this because choosing childcare is one of the biggest decisions parents make. Families deserve to hear real experiences so they can make informed choices about where their children will spend their days.
