This is a review of our experience with the Home of the Good Shepherd at the Malta, NY location, which by itself, is in a beautiful park-like setting with no heavy traffic and plentiful outdoor walking spaces. An outsized front porch is perfect for enjoying the good weather in the spring, summer and fall.
About a year ago, Mom and Dad had reached the limit of being able to live on their own in their own home. At ages 89 and 91, we were at our wits’ end about next steps. We began exploring assisted living situations and contacted HGS at Malta. We received a tour and had numerous meetings with Kimberly Davis, who oversees admissions and activities. She was an empathetic listener, efficiently walked us through all the application steps, and was able to provide a two-room suite so M&D could be together. She had all the contacts to make move-in hassle-free and the rest of the staff stepped up immediately to meet their needs (both urgent and long-term). Unfortunately, after about 4 months, Dad passed away and was able to receive hospice care right in the facility. Since that time, Mom has struggled with her grief and is just now adjusting to living by herself with the great care of staff like Christina, Nicole, Sarah, Liz, Maggie, Delores and Daniel.
There are numerous musical performances and special events every week as well as trips to local restaurants and scenic drives around the county. There are many opportunities to keep life exciting with crafts, baking sessions, and holiday parties that the residents and their families enjoy together. Mom is going on her second year and is content and well cared for. We visit numerous times each week and are always greeted like family whenever we walk through the door. That speaks volumes!
Sincerely, A grateful family from Saratoga Springs, NY

Due to unforeseen circumstances over the last few months, my family decided that my parents were in need of more assistance on a daily basis. This was a difficult and emotional decision, but in the end, we are 100% certain that we made the right one. Kim, and the rest of the staff at The Home of the Good Shepherd in Malta, made this transition not only comfortable and seamless for my parents, but for the rest of my family as well. Kim laid out all of the information in a manner that was easy to understand, went over all of the services and supports that were available, and was very patient with all of our questions. She responds to emails in a very timely manner, and offered all of this information in a calm voice with no pressure at all. On the day my parents moved in, we were all a bit nervous. For 50 years they had lived on their own and this was a huge change for them. The staff greeted them by name, escorted them to lunch, offered various social opportunities, and reviewed their medication management. Kim came to the room after they were settled in and asked if there was anything they needed or if there were any other questions they had. Now a couple of months later, my parents have had a great experience. They have been involved socially, are well taken care of, and are safe. As my family travels down this new path of taking care of my parents well-being, we are blessed to have them in the care of Kim and the rest of the wonderful staff at the Home of the Good Shepherd.

Since the day my Dad moved into Home of the Good Shepherd, he has felt welcomed and loved. His first day there they were having a lunch for just the men. He is not a shy guy, so immediately started conversing with the guys at his table.
His room is just the right size, and the staff helped us bring everything in. Everyone was so friendly. We knew he was in a good place!
Fast forward 6+ years and Dad is thriving. He has so many friends, including staff. The staff knows everyone personally. Whenever there are any concerns medically, the staff is sure to call and fill us in.
They have a calendar full of events each month. Dad has to check his calendar before he accepts an invitation to go out with us. He doesn’t want to miss anything. I love that we are welcome anytime to participate in any activities taking place. One of the best events was Prom Night. We had so much fun dancing and singing to the great music.
I couldn’t ask for a better place for my Dad.

My mother lived here for 2 years, before passing peacefully. I highly recommend this Home. Is it perfect? No. Taking care of the elderly is not easy. If it was, we the relatives would be able to do it in our homes. I feel that the staff tries very hard to work with everyone, according to their needs. I met a lot of kind, concerned, hardworking, (and sometimes frustrated) staff that just didn't have the time to do everything they wanted to. I am very thankful that my Mom had HOGS to go to, she received very good care, respect, and peaceful days. It is a good place for a loved one.
This place has been wonderful for my mother. We appreciate the staff and the great care she gets.
