As a lifelong Catholic, I sought out this local congregation for Christian fellowship, following in the example of Pope Francis (who in 2019 became the first Pope to officially meet with LDS leadership in the Vatican, to promote solidarity and mutual service). Without access to a vehicle, and with mental and physical limitations on my travel, I was no longer close to any Catholic Church, with the sale of Mary, Queen Of The World. I believed the Christian spirit of community would be found here in this LDS Church instead.
Initially, my outreach was met with warmth; Elder Dixon even described my desire to volunteer as 'Christlike.' However, the moment I provided full transparency regarding my health challenges, modest income, and physical lifting restrictions, the tone shifted from fellowship to total silence.
I believe I have been effectively 'ghosted.' This is a clear example of what Pope Francis called the 'Culture of Discarding' (or Throwaway Culture)—where individuals are welcomed only as long as they are perceived as high-functioning assets, then discarded as 'unnecessary' the moment their human limitations are disclosed.
Be warned: if you are a person with a handicap, mental health struggles, or physical limitations, do not expect the 'Christlike' welcome to last.
You will likely be judged by your perceived utility rather than your soul. If you seek a community that values human dignity over 'productivity,' look elsewhere. Using religion as a shield to ignore the vulnerable is not Christianity; it is a bureaucracy of the elite. Their treatment of the mentally ill, disabled, and others such as myself led me to engage in this point; as a duty to warn other Christians. Their treatment of others is likely evidence of why this gathering has not grown past 65 people. I will seek Christian fellowship elsewhere.
