Mike and Elaine Adler, two successful entrepreneurs and community activists, founded the Adler Aphasia Center in 2003 located in Maywood, NJ. Ten years earlier, Mike had suffered a stroke after bypass surgery. The stroke left Mike with aphasia. Elaine’s life changed as well. She felt frustrated, confused and helpless as she tried to put their changed lives back together. Although there were many hospital-based speech pathology services in the area that could help Mike with his aphasia, the Adlers found no program that could help him adjust to living with aphasia. The Adlers researched speech pathology clinics around the world and uncovered several unique programs where people touched by aphasia were learning new ways to communicate.

What type of therapy/rehabilitation services do you provide?
The Adler Aphasia Center is a social center for people with Aphasia and their family members/caregivers. We offer discussion groups and activities facilitated by speech-language pathologists, trained staff and volunteers, and some of our members. We do not provide individual speech therapy services. We run group programs for people with aphasia, using the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia as our guiding philosophy.
Do you bill private insurance or Medicare for services?
Because we do not provide typical speech therapy services, we do not bill nor accept private insurance or Medicare.
When can I start participating in Center group programming?
New members can join the Maywood Center at the start of a new semester, after completing a tour and our Aphasia Education Program. Toms River and West Orange locations offer rolling admission. Please visit our page How To Become a Member on our website.
Once I'm a member, how long can I stay?
The quick answer is, “As long as you’d like.” The longer answer is that members remain at the Center as long as they are interested in participating in our programs, have aphasia, pay their tuition, and continue to fit the membership criteria. Our members do not graduate from programming or have a ‘term limit'.
