We love American Montessori! Miss Sandy and the teachers take great care of our son and give him so much love and attention. They really take the time to know each child individually! We like the smaller setting and we think our son just thrives. He learns so much more than he would at home and really loves the variety. It is his second home! The teachers and other parents are respectful and keep their children home when sick, which has really shown how important that is, since American Montessori hasn’t had to shut down during COVID yet. That’s really a testament to the cleanliness of the facility and the caring amongst the teachers and other families. We are so happy and grateful to have found such a wonderfully small, family owned, and involved Montessori school!

My son attended this school for almost a year before we had to move out of the area. He was 16 months when he started and just over 2 when we left. We absolutely loved our time there! He learned how to count, the ABC's and his vocabulary flourished. He loved his teachers and still talks about them daily. We will greatly miss American Montessori!

Why should you choose an American Montessori education for your child?
Between the ages of two and six, children experience rapid development in intelligence and social skills. This is a time when they are naturally curious, eager to explore, and highly receptive to learning. American Montessori classrooms are designed to nurture this enthusiasm by offering a wide range of engaging materials that spark interest and encourage exploration. Our teachers are specially trained to observe and support each child’s readiness to learn new skills, fostering their natural abilities and independence. In our environment, children are empowered to make choices, think independently, and enjoy learning in a way that’s tailored to their unique style. Learning becomes a joyful, meaningful experience.
Why are the classrooms so quiet and children so serious?
At American Montessori, the school day is thoughtfully structured into work and play periods. During work periods — typically two and a half hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon for full-day students — children are deeply engaged in activities they choose themselves. You might see a child tracing sandpaper letters, exploring geography with puzzle maps, or learning math with bead chains. Others may be painting or creating collages. The quiet and serious atmosphere reflects focused concentration, not rigidity. Children are immersed in tasks that interest them, and their serious expressions show how deeply they are engaged in meaningful learning.
What makes American Montessori special?
We go beyond teaching academic skills — we cultivate a lifelong love of learning. Our approach makes education exciting and enjoyable, while also helping children develop respect for others, confidence in their choices, and a strong sense of social responsibility. We believe that true education includes character development, emotional intelligence, and the ability to make thoughtful decisions. Our classrooms are places where children grow not only intellectually, but also personally.
Why choose American Montessori?
American Montessori has proudly served South of the River communities — including Burnsville, Savage, Lakeville, Prior Lake, Apple Valley, Rosemount, and Eagan — for over 28 years. Our diverse and experienced staff brings over 100 years of combined Montessori and childcare expertise. This depth of experience allows us to truly understand each child and support their individual growth and development in a nurturing, respectful environment.
What do you have to offer that my child can't get at other preschools, daycares, or other Montessori's?
Our classrooms offer a distinct Montessori experience that you’ll notice immediately. The materials we use to teach reading, math, science, geography, and more are specifically designed to make abstract concepts tangible and understandable for young minds. Developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, these tools support neurological and physiological development in ways that traditional methods often overlook. Children learn from one another, gaining confidence as both students and teachers. Our educators act as guides and observers, stepping in when a child needs support or is ready for a new challenge. This approach encourages independence, self-motivation, and a deep understanding of how each child learns best.
