I don’t know where to begin, since Byron Keenan Funeral Home is where my Mom and Sister’s celebration of their lives ended there.
My sister in ‘22, and mom this past May ‘25.
I can’t express enough how grateful I was for that. Everyone there helped make “making those dreadful arrangements” smooth and seamless. It was hard enough to accept, but the staff was so approachable and always available for every question and always had an answer.
Frequently Asked Questions About Byron Keenan Funeral Home & Cremation Tribute Center
What drives the cost of a funeral?
Funerals are labor intensive A funeral's cost extends beyond the merchandise, and includes the services of the funeral director--their role in making the necessary arrangements, filling out forms, and dealing with all the other figures involved after a death (doctors, lawyers, insurance companies). Funeral directors work an average of forty hours per funeral. The cost of operating a funeral home is included in the total amount as well. Funeral homes are a 24-hour operation, with extensive facilities that need to be maintained and secured.
What is embalming and what purpose does it serve?
Embalming sanitizes and preserves the body. It also slows down the decomposition process and enhances the appearance of a body impacted by a traumatic death or illness. Embalming gives time to the family of the deceased to arrange a service and allows for the possibility of an open-casket viewing.
Do I need to have an embalming?
No. In fact, some religions forbid embalming. Some countries do require embalming by law in order for remains to leave or enter the country. If it is not against your religious custom, embalming is generally recommended, especially if there is an extended gap between death and burial or cremation.
What do I need to know about income tax when I lose a spouse?
Uncertainty about income tax issues can add to the stress experienced from the death of a spouse. You should meet with your family attorney and/or tax advisor as soon as possible to review your particular tax and estate circumstances. Bring a detailed list of your questions to the meeting. If you do not have an attorney or tax advisor, call the IRS toll-free at 800-829-1040 for answers to specific tax questions.
Is there financial help if I need it?
There are a number of options available, including:
Determine if the deceased person qualifies for any entitlements. Check with the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and with your State Fund. Many people are entitled to get financial assistance with their funeral costs from these agencies if they qualify.
Review all insurance policies the deceased person has, including life insurance. Some life insurance policies have coverage clauses for funeral related costs.
Find local charities providing financial help for funeral expenses. Search for non profit organizations and for churches in your area.
Talk to your funeral director about cremation options - these can be much less expensive depending on your choices.
