Went with a friend to visit. We took a weight lifting class. It was great. The instructor was friendly and did an excellent job leading. The facility is nice and seems to have many offerings.

I had a very disappointing experience tonight at North Lexington Family YMCA on 4/7/26 around 8 PM. After my workout, I stepped away from everyone to breastfeed my baby. I intentionally chose a chair far from others, turned myself toward the wall, and my baby was completely under my shirt. I was already doing everything I could to be private and respectful. A man who introduced himself as the building manager approached me and told me breastfeeding was not allowed unless I had a cover. I explained that my baby was already covered under my shirt, but he continued by saying that with kids around, parents might complain or their children might “ask questions.” That response was upsetting. This is supposed to be a family-centered environment, yet I was made to feel like feeding my baby discreetly was inappropriate. Meanwhile, gyms are full of people in much less clothing every day, and no one says anything. The double standard was hard to ignore. What made it even more confusing was that as I was leaving, he suggested I use the childcare area next time. But if the concern is children “asking questions,” wouldn’t taking my baby into the childcare area completely defeat that point? I also mentioned that if this is truly their policy, it should at least be clearly posted so mothers know. I was told there was no reason to “go to that extent” because not many people do it. The whole interaction left me feeling embarrassed, singled out, and unwelcome for simply feeding my child in the most discreet way possible. Being a woman is hard, and being a mother can feel even harder when moments like this make something so natural feel like a problem.
