I was extremely disappointed with the way Pip Challenger conducted our loved one’s funeral service. Janet was a larger-than-life character who deserved a warm, personal send-off surrounded by memories from the people who truly knew and loved her.
Unfortunately, the service felt very controlled and impersonal. Pip Challenger categorically denied a loved one from carrying the coffin, even though the pallbearer had said this would be absolutely fine when asked. Family and close friends were also prevented from sharing memories, despite this being something Janet herself would have wanted. No one should ever be refused the chance to carry a loved one’s coffin or denied the opportunity to speak about someone they truly loved and cared for.
The most upsetting part was when my mother-in-law, who has early onset Alzheimer’s, stood up to share some heartfelt and respectful memories of Janet. Rather than allowing her a few moments to speak, Pip Challenger attempted to stop her and even spoke over her while she was talking. I found this extremely rude, insensitive, and lacking compassion during an already emotional day.
Funerals are not just about sticking rigidly to a schedule — they are about honouring a person’s life and allowing loved ones the space to grieve and remember them. Sadly, that did not happen here, and many of us left feeling upset and disappointed with how the service was conducted.
