‘Pilgrims' Friend Society (PFS) was founded in 1807 to support elderly Christians. Formerly ‘The Aged Pilgrims’ Friend Society’, we are one of the 80 oldest charities in the UK. Life was tough in those pre-welfare state days and many older lives were shortened by neglect and poverty. Our charity raised funds and helped with regular pensions and practical gifts such as groceries, and warm blankets and coal. Spiritual well-being was always seen as central and, singularly, these helps were delivered in person, with Christian encouragement.
1807 was also the year that slavery was abolished in Great Britain, thanks to campaigner William Wilberforce who, convinced of the value of each individual to God, joined us as vice president of the Societ
