On 29 November 1841 the cornerstone for the Darien U.M. Church was laid and the new church building was dedicated 31 March 1842. Methodism in Darien predates the church building with Rev. John Wesley's visit to Darien on 2 Jan 1737.
In 1857 the church was refurbished, and a second Methodist Church building was erected to minister to the enslaved and free African American community in Darien.
The churches faced many trials and tribulations, including the burning of Darien in 1863 during the American Civil War which spared these two Methodist Church buildings, the Grant home, and some tabby walls.
