It is not recommended to scatter human ashes over the ground, sand, or in water unless you're three miles out to sea. Neither Karen nor I was religious but still....My father died when I was 7 and our mother told us the small box on one shelf was Daddy's ashes. I used to worry if the place was on fire, should I try to save it.
