I would first like to mention that I am not a congregant of this church. I was attending an event at the neighboring park and part of the church's parking lot was being used for event parking. I was informed to avoid parking blocked by yellow tape so I drove around and found a vacant handicap space. I am a chronically ill person and have a valid handicap parking placard. This particular spot was not blocked off, or near, any yellow tape. As I got out of my car, chair in hand, two female congregants informed me that if I was attending the park event I could not park in that spot. A parking attendant walked over to me and I showed him my placard and mentioned there was no yellow tape. He agreed with me that this was unreasonable since nearly all handicap spaces had been blocked off but the two women remained standing there and neither he, nor I, wanted a confrontation. I got in my car and parked farther away. As I walked to the park I saw the two female congregants still standing there and the spot remained vacant. Needless to say, i did not stay at the event long. I could not get past the fact that two congregants of this church told a disabled person they could not park in a disabled space. What's more is that they didn't offer to help or ask about my condition. As a fellow christian I am greatly disappointed by this behavior. It showed a lack of empathy and compassion on the part of your congregants. To add insult to injury, it happened on the grounds of your church. Please keep in mind that your congregants, particularly when present on your grounds, are representatives of your church. This behavior not only reflects poorly on those two women but also on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It is my hope that the director, pastor, or priest address this issue with the congregants so that others like myself are not unjustly treated in the future.
